"Tut" American made Black Secret Language

Updated: Sep 6

TUT is a secret reading method created by black American slaves. This was done at a time when it was against the law for them to learn to read.

"Now, after more than 250 years of secrecy, a language used by slaves to protect themselves and their families has been re-discovered. Gloria McIlwain's book on TUT Language is the first and only comprehensive work that covers the history of this almost extinct language. Using more than 150 cleverly designed graphics with TUT-Words, and a glossary of over 130 TUT-Words with English translation, she brings this language into the 21st Century!"

TUT Language spells words using certain English phonics. It, also, creates breathing patterns, which allow correct tongue and lip placement to form sounds an alphabet takes when it becomes part of a word. These unique, orally passed "TUT-Words" were memorized with one's ABC's as a secret, self-taught, basic reading system. From Gloria McIlwain's book, "TUT Language,"

Maya Angelou mentions learning Tutnese as a child in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the first volume of her series of autobiographies. She and her friend Louise "spent tedious hours teaching ourselves the Tut language. You (yak oh you) know (kack nug oh wug) what (wack hash a tut). Since all the other children spoke Pig Latin, we were superior because Tut was hard to speak and even harder to understand. At last I began to understand what girls giggled about. Louise would rattle off a few sentences to me in the unintelligible Tut language and would laugh. Naturally I laughed too. Snickered, really, understanding nothing. I don't think she understood half of what she was saying herself, but, after all, girls have to giggle..

In Tut, when you have a double letter (like “LL” in hello or “SS” in miss), you don’t just repeat the letter code — you say “square” before the letter sound.

So instead of:

  • HELLO = hash-e-lul-lul-o

It becomes:

  • HELLO = hash-e-square-lul-o
